Avoid an SOS on Your CSO

Written by Accu-Tab News Team | January 17, 2025

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there are approximately 860 communities across the country serving 40 million people that are supported by local combined sewer overflow (CSO) systems.

Much of the infrastructure designed to address excess water run-off was installed in in the 1850s through the 1950s. With heavy or prolonged rainfall, these older systems can become overwhelmed, causing additional sewage and debris to be released into our rivers and streams.

In May of 2024, the EPA made available some $41 million in grants through the Sewer Overflow and Stormwater Reuse Municipal Grant (OSG) Program. The program provides communities across the country with funds to upgrade outdated CSO and wastewater system infrastructure.

For communities seeking a simple, safe and low-cost solution to better address unpredictable weather events and the run-off that can accompany them, the Accu-Tab® Chlorination System provides a proven solution as part of an integrated, end-to-end approach.

The Accu-Tab Edge

Accu-Tab avoids the pitfalls commonly associated with safety concerns around chlorine gas, liquid containment and rapid assay degradation of sodium hypochlorite, as well as the high cost of UV disinfection.

  • UV treatment requires expensive bulbs and consistent replacement parts, as well as a robust cleaning program to ensure proper efficacy. Accu-Tab provides a significant cost reduction compared to UV solutions, as well as operational cost savings in electricity and maintenance.
  • While sodium hypochlorite is an affordable and effective disinfectant, it loses its potency in storage. At delivery, sodium hypochlorite has a 12.5 to 15 percent potency, but that number can drop to as low as 7 before the product is even used—depending on storage conditions and timing—which can often be the case in wastewater facilities.
  • Chlorine gas is actually the cheapest treatment option. But the associated health risks and hazmat requirements associated with chlorine gas can outweigh the cost savings, not to mention the added training that comes with SCBA requirements. And with chlorine gas being distributed in large containers ranging from 150 pounds to 1 ton, handling is a challenge.
