# Beware High Bather Loads

Overcrowded pools present a wide range of potential hazards, from an increased likelihood of injury to even drowning.
Lifeguards do their best to watch everywhere at once, but an overcrowded pool makes it harder to spot someone in distress above and below the water line.
Keeping the pool's water balanced and properly filtered is a good first step toward improving water clarity.
Maintaining balanced and appropriately filtered water keeps the bottom of the pool visible, while keeping the pH between 7.2 and 7.8, the total alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm, and chlorine between 1-4 ppm keeps water clear.
Westlake research chemist Samantha Greig outlined this topic in a recent edition of *Recreation Management*, as well as how having the proper sanitization chemicals and equipment is a necessary step to keep patrons safe.
